Fall is here again and that means cooler weather, chili, and, of course, board games. It’s also the time that the board gaming world turns its attention to the Spiel gaming faire in Essen, Germany – where many new games will be released. That means it’s time for us to look through the giant list of games that will be there over on BGG and give you our picks. What are we excited about this year? Read on to find out.
CHARTERSTONE | Jamey Stegmaier| Stonemaier Games
Where to start with this one? Stonemaier games – check! Legacy game – check! Worker placement – check! Modest play time – check! Ability to play solo, drop players or add them – check! This game hits so many of the things we are looking for in a Legacy game. It also solves some of the problems that made it hard to complete previous Legacy games. Charterstone is very interesting to several of us here at the Pub.
Unlock! Mystery Adventures | Multiple Designers | Space Cowboys
I have only played Unlock! The Formula so far but I immediately asked for (and received) the other two for my birthday this year. The Formula was such a great experience, I can’t wait for more. Unlock! Is like TIME Stories-lite using the escape room formula. You are trying to figure out a series of puzzles to complete the objective the game sets for you. And all of this is done using a deck of cards (similar to TIME Stories’ deck but without the board and all the pieces). I’m very excited to see where the Mystery Adventures series takes the game.
Gaia Project | Jens Drögemüller, Helge Ostertag | Feuerland Spiele
Terra Mystica is one of the most consistently highly rated games. Its has been at the top of BGG’s ranking for a long time. The designers of the aforementioned game are coming out with something new and it’s basically Terra Mystica – IN SPACE! I don’t know why, but when you add In Space to something it just appeals to me. I really like Terra Mystica so I am looking forward to Gaia Project with much excitement.
Bunny Kingdom | Richard Garfield | IELLO
It’s hard not to chuckle a little when talking about this game. It just sounds silly. But the more I have heard about it, the more I am interested in it. Also, it is from Richard Garfield. It is hard to ignore any game he designs. So I won’t be ignoring this game with a funny name and you shouldn’t either. But still, say it out loud, “Want to play some Bunny Kingdom?” Yeah. Still sounds silly.
Clans of Caledonia | Juma Al-JouJou | Karma Games
I missed out on the Kickstarter several months ago because it was at the same time as Zombicide: Green Horde (which should also be at Essen). I just didn’t have the money to back both at the time. That said, this is at the top of my want list. It’s a mid-to-heavy economic game where you will be playing as a clan in Scotland. Each clan has unique abilities which is super cool for a euro! What really caught my attention, though, was the player board where as you pull off the wooden bits it shows you what your production will be. Reminds me a bit of the Scythe player board, but without the worker placement aspect. Super excited to add this to my collection.
Scythe: the Wind Gambit | Jamey Stegmaier | Stonemaier Games
Speaking of Scythe, I’m sure that anyone who is a fan of the base game is looking forward to this expansion. If you haven’t heard of it, though, this is going to bring in airships that can carry workers and goods across the map. It also adds variable end game conditions. Can’t wait to get this one to the table.
Harvest | Trey Chambers | Tasty Minstrel Games
This is a playful little farming worker placement game with wooden poop bits! HA! Seriously though, this is an interesting game if you are looking for a simple, quick euro. There’s not a ton of choices but a good variety throughout the game to create some depth. What I like most is the drafting at the beginning of each round. Very similar to the game, Ra, you drafting turn order as well an action you want for that round and replacing that card with one from your hand. Looks like a solid game that I really want to try out.
Also, worth noting: Neuroshima Hex is getting a new faction!! Iron Gang comes with a new “chain” ability which connects two units in a straight line, allowing them to target and hit any unit on that line. Pretty sweet!
